Neurotransmitter Balance

What are Neurotransmitters?
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that relay signals between nerve cells (neurons).  With the help of neurotransmitters, brain cells communicate with one another as well as with organs throughout the body.  Neurotransmitters are made in the body from amino acids.  Without a sufficient supply of the right amino acids, neurotransmitter levels can become depleted, and this chemical imbalance can lead to various kinds of health problems.

Some of the more important neurotransmitters are:
Epinephrine
Norepinephrine
Dopamine
Serotonin
PEA (phenylethylamine)
Histamine
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)
Glutamate

Neurotransmitter related symptoms include
depression, anxiety, insomnia, ADD/ADHD, poor appetite control, compulsive behaviors, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, lowered ability to focus, and sleep problems.

The way to find out if you have an imbalance is to get tested.

Home test kits are used to test for urinary and salivary levels of neurotransmitters and hormones.

The samples are analyzed by an independent laboratory. We receive the results and interpret them to determine whether or not you have an imbalance, and if so, how to correct it.

Treatment Options

If you have a neurotransmitter imbalance, the conventional medical approach to treatment utilizes one or more psychotropic medications such as Prozac or Wellbutrin.

Complementary therapies that may help include massage and relaxation techniques.

We recommend natural non-prescription neurobiological agents. Targeted Amino Acid Therapy is proving to be an effective means of normalizing the brain's chemistry and restoring quality of life. For example, 5-HTP is needed by the brain to make serotonin, and tyrosine is required to make norepinephrine. Taken in the right amounts and proportions, amino acids appear to be both safe and effective for treatment of neurotransmitter balance and associated symptoms.
